The rooms in which this project is set have a history of being used as a dental practice since the 1980s. But even though the style of these years comes with its own charm, a fundamental redesign was decided on. The space was to become both inviting and modern, appearing open while at the same time conveying security. A goal that was achieved with the use of clear shapes, warm colors and natural materials.

Already while looking in from the outside, one can notice that this practice boldly stands out from the usual white-on-white of the dentist’s office. The colorful reception area opens up behind a semi-transparent hallway made of polycarbonate panels framed in ash. The intention of a space designed to be used with kids starts here, with a welcome counter at children’s height.

The kids can and should move within the space freely, sign in independently and be able to ask questions to feel welcome and involved. A second waiting area is created here, right at the front of the office, with deep, custom-made windowsill-benches at the large facade window.

Bordeaux red, petrol and sunshine yellow, complemented by the natural tone of the oiled ash, connect a clear design language that creates an inviting atmosphere – warm, bright, open and contemporary. The hygienic and practical requirements that a dental practice entails are integrated playfully. The result is rooms that combine businesslike professionalism with a playful and warm sense of calmness and security.

As a talisman and mascot animal of the practice, the toucan is part of the logo. It finds its correspondence in the shapes and colors of the interior design and the guidance system. The semi-circular shapes, borrowed from the graphic toucan of the logo, are found in all fixtures, from the radii of the central cube to the arch of the sliding door, as well as in the lights and the privacy screen on the large window front.

In the waiting area, the play structure emphasized the color scheme and design language once again with a sunny yellow arch. The different levels and platforms for play are complemented with magnetic surfaces on the walls an the structure itself. Here, The children are invited to climb around, play with the magnets and discover small niches filled with with books and toys.

Different activities take away the fear of the upcoming treatment and shorten the waiting time. Warm colors, natural materials and clear shapes have a calming effect and create a pleasant atmosphere. Complementing this are plants in hanging elements throughout the practice – a piece of nature in the interior and a small jungle for the toucan.

In the center of the office, the petrol cube houses the X-ray room. Adapted to the design language, the corners are strongly rounded and make space for the wardrobe. In contrast to this strongly accentuated center of the practice, the treatment rooms take a step back. Simple and clear, each treatment room picks up one color, which is reflected in the couch, a furniture element and on one wall. The children are thus accompanied by the design from the entrance to the treatment chair.

Even if it is not consciously perceived, a clear design provides orientation and additional security. A well thought-out spatial arrangement optimizes processes and relaxes the daily work routine. In this way, the spatial perception is transferred to the mood of all those involved – the young patients, parents and accompanying persons, the employees as well as the dentist herself.
