Daycare centre Spreesprotten was imaginatively transformed from a former shisha bar in Berlin Kreuzberg. The work at Spreesprotten is based on the educational concept of Maria Montessori. The most important aspects are the opportunities for free movement in space, the consideration of various needs and activities, learning about materials, and exploring the environment independently. These aspects inspired the design of both the rooms and objects.

The children are given the opportunity to learn in and around the room. Material qualities are conveyed, the effects of color are realized, and new perspectives are created. The space itself becomes the educator by providing an environment that integrates function-play-pedagogy. Key architectural details become play elements: the door functions as a chalkboard; the radiator cover is used as a climbing element, a retreat and a vantage point. The footboard transforms itself into a 50m long marble railway!
